Trust and faith in the U.S. federal government is at historic lows — particularly related to public health. Should one reduce fats or sugar in our diet? Conflicting information from government. How about GMO or organic food? Who can we believe?
President Trump wanted a wall on the southern border; Biden wants a more open immigration policy. Some claim we now face a crisis. Black Americans are horribly fearful of police due to government failure. Asian Americans now claim to be fearful of other Americans — again, due to the failure of government.
Those who follow cannabis (marijuana) policy are livid with the federal government. For 50 years, the U.S. has maintained cannabis as a Schedule I drug. Yet some 36 states openly disagree and have defied the federal position for some 25 years now.
A year ago, facing a growing threat from SARS-CoV-2, our nation’s top public health experts, CDC Director Robert Redfield, Surgeon General Jerome Adams, and the nation’s most respected and trusted doctor, Anthony Fauci, said, “Absolutely NO to face masks.”
On March 19, 2020, ClearHealthLife was the first publication in the nation to officially disagree with the top officials. The Asian world was #MaskingUp. Americans #MaskedUp during the 1918-20 H1N1 pandemic. How did we forget? Why were our scientists collectively, universally and 100% wrong? Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
I repost our historical March 19th edition again as a reminder that government isn’t always right. Our nation founded when the federal government agreed to a compromise that valued Black slaves as 3/5th of White people. Laws aren’t always moral and the majority isn’t always correct.
America’s Political Reps are KILLING Us
Most of us suffer some kind of lockdown. Our freedoms are heavily restricted. Sports and entertainment events are shuttered. Restaurants, malls, health clubs are closed. There is panic. We have never experienced such disruption in our lives. COVID-19 is the new adversary. We face the Boomer Apocalypse, which represents the Third World War.
As of Friday (3.20), there have been 246,275 confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide. The U.S. saw a 51.3% increase from the day before putting the number of cases at 14,250. The death rate jumped 36.7% to 205. Globally, the number of fatalities from COVID-19 passed the 10,000 mark. Italy now has the dreadful distinction of having the most deaths in the world.
How did officials not know? H1N1 was a major threat. We didn’t learn? SARS, MERS … many more examples. Ebola scared us greatly. Yet American officials went on building nuclear weapons, tanks and battleships, while ignoring the Real & Present Danger. Now the world economy falls to its knees.
Most health protections are wise. Not enough done to stop air travelers and cruise lines. Stay in place for a couple weeks. Officials recognize we cannot contain the virus. They admit there is no cure at this time and none of us have natural immunity. COVID-19 has spread like a global wildfire. The U.S. is now seeing infections outpace Italy’s record.
Medical experts estimate 80% of people over 70 years of age could perish. Those of all ages with compromised immune systems could die. America and the world might witness millions of deaths and the U.S. system is overwhelmed.
Seeking a Solution
Most of us pray for a quick end to this Third World War. We need to return to work. We want “normal” activities to return.
First, we will not return completely — COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the way we live. Humans are a filthy species. We grow like a cancer. Waters in Venice, Italy are clean now. Dolphins have returned, because humans are gone.
The crisis of homelessness illustrates part of our failure. Not only do people defecate on streets, harsh conditions shorten their lives. Homelessness is bad for communities and public health; tragic for individuals.
Second, we’re destroying the environment for human life. We know this to be true. We simply can’t agree on a solution or path forward. COVID-19 will change this. We must clean up our waste. We can’t continue to “sh*t where we eat.”
Third, increased population density, unclean conditions, and our growing interdependence ensures COVID-19, SARS, MERS, Ebola and other breakouts will not only continue, they will become more common and severe.
The likely epicenter of COVID-19, is the wet-markets of Wuhan, China. Wild animals are held captive together and sold as delicacies or pets. Experts warn “a terrifying mix of viruses and species can occur.”
“If [animals] are being shipped or held in markets, in close proximity to other animals or humans, then there is a chance those viruses are being shed in large numbers.”
Andrew Cunningham, Professor of Wildlife Epidemiology at the Zoological Society of London
He said the other animals in a market like that are also more vulnerable to infection as they too are stressed. “We are increasing transport of animals — for medicine, for pets, for food — at a scale that we have never done before,” said Kate Jones, Chair of Ecology and Biodiversity at University College London.
“We are also destroying their habitats into landscapes that are more human-dominated. Animals are mixing in weird ways that have never happened before. So in a wet market, you are going to have a load of animals in cages on top of each other.”
Pathogens that evolved in bats can withstand a high body temperature, so human fever does not work effectively as a defense mechanism. We now must protect ourselves from each other and the people we love. The question is how.
Ignoring Health Warnings
Local officials here in Hawai’i considered me a pariah for screaming “Wake Up!” about the vaping epidemic that became a rage with our nation’s youngsters. It took a breakout of vaping illnesses and deaths to get them to pay attention. Nobody seemed to care about addiction to nicotine, which is poison. It took a high number of deaths to bring focus to this health disaster.
Businesses in Hawai’i consider me “unemployable” because I shunned opioid medications, due to the high risk of addiction and OD death. Used the more safe alternative, Medical Cannabis. Over 30,000+ local residents are undesirable employees like me because we refuse dangerous opioids. Opioids kill more Americans than COVID-19, and similar to COVID-19, opioids kill far more men than women.
With more than 200,000 coronavirus cases worldwide and thousands of deaths, a striking pattern is appearing in the hardest-hit countries: More men are dying than women. [source]
I’m a trained public health expert and epidemiologist. Hawaiian Electric females CEO Connie Lau and HR director Shana Buco fired me, a male, for making the smarter choice — and men are at higher risk. Neither have medical training. They force good employees to make bad healthcare decisions. Their ignorance gets people killed. Shame on them! Show some love for your fellow man!
“What matters in life is not great deeds, but great love.”
Hawaiian Electric and Governor Ige now plan to deploy some 15 MILLION solar panels that will consume over 5,500 football fields of luscious green island spaces in the middle of a hurricane zone. Puerto Rico’s energy utility, PREPA, got thousands killed by their corporate and executive incompetence. Will Hawaiian Electric get residents killed as well?
Few public officials and business executives have medical training. Why then are they making the laws and setting policies, although they having minimal experience if any. Garbage in, garbage out, as they say.
COVID-19 Changes the World
China reported no NEW infections this week. They appear to be successful to #StopTheSpread. Isolation, physical distancing, and when outside or among people, citizens are wearing masks. #MaskUp
Yesterday, March 18th, in the midst of a global pandemic, Hawai’i Gov. David Ige addressed the public. Any thoughts about the image below?
I’m sure the governor is a bright guy. Due to recent public protests, he is thought to have a weak personality. He now demands “extreme social distancing.” Is he trustworthy? Should we listen to him or follow his example?
On the national front, the president and vice president are currently addressing governors. Most of us have formed an opinion about the president. Some hate the guy passionately, as we know. He’s a polarizing figure. What’s missing in this picture?
Successful Outcomes Against COVID-19
Both Hong Kong and South Korea had highly efficient responses to COVID-19. They tracked those who were infected and quarantined them. They implemented social distancing and isolation protocols. MOST IMPORTANTLY, they masked the population. Masking can increase the effectiveness of social distancing to close to 100%.
While wearing a mask has become the norm in many places in Asia, the mask frenzy has hit nowhere as hard as Hong Kong. At the height of COVID-19 panic, residents lined up overnight outside drugstores to buy face masks. South Korea, Singapore and Japan have distributed face masks to residents. Taiwan and Thailand have banned the export of masks to meet soaring local demand.
South Korea will require voters to don masks and wear disposable gloves at ballot boxes next month as the country pushes ahead with parliamentary elections in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. Voters will be required to stand at least 3 feet apart when waiting in lines, sanitize their hands and wear plastic gloves provided by election workers before entering booths.
An American family in China detailed anonymously how they have survived over eight weeks of quarantine. One activity they miss is exercising at their gym, “We tried some online workouts, doing old-fashioned calisthenics and bodyweight exercises. We found old running shoes, put on our face masks (even though they serve very little purpose when you are outdoors away from crowds) and started running.”
The mother added, “Now that the weather is warming up and the gym is still closed, running has become a not-terrible, even pleasant, part of the routine. We have started seeing more and more of our neighbors outside with us (all of us wearing masks and keeping our distance).”
Unfortunately, Americans are different. Time.com points out in the U.S. wearing a face mask when healthy is discouraged to the point of becoming socially unacceptable. Gov. Ige isn’t wearing a mask. Neither are Trump and Pence. This is a fatal flaw in our national containment strategy. We need officials to be LEADERS now.
Surgeon General Jerome Adams said: “Seriously people — STOP BUYING MASKS! They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!” Mr. Adams fails to see the big picture!
#1 — masks increase the efficacy of social distancing strategies. #2 — there are shortages of masks. Demand more. Thousands of workers need jobs. America builds what she needs. We don’t limit safety measures for the public. #MaskUp
“Whenever you foresee to have someone within two to three meters (6.5 to 10 feet) apart, then it’s better to wear a mask.”
If Govenor Ige cared about YOUR health and safety, he would speak to us like shown below. He would set an example. Masks by themselves are not 100% solution. Added to other extreme social distancing measures, they increase the effectiveness of all our efforts.
David Hui, respiratory medicine expert at the Chinese University of Hong Kong who studied the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) extensively, says it’s “common sense” wearing a mask would protect against infectious diseases like COVID-19.
“If you are standing in front of someone who is sick, the mask will give some protection. The mask provides a barrier from respiratory droplets, which is predominantly how the virus spreads.”
Joseph Tsang, an infectious disease specialist, says the three layers of a surgical mask filter help reduce the risk of contact with droplets, through which the virus is transmitted. “Whenever you foresee to have someone within two to three meters (6.5 to 10 feet) apart, then it’s better to wear a mask.”
On the national level, Trump and Pence should be addressing the nation like this. Wearing a mask should be the next form of saying, “I love you. I want you to be safe.”
The island of Kaua’i announced a curfew beginning Friday evening at 9pm through 5am through April. This is extreme. A curfew won’t be highly effective. Yet officials want to take ALL possible precautions. Therefore, we need officials to MASK themselves and demand others do the same. We are at war. This is the Third World War. All must sacrifice. All must pitch in.
Elected officials are getting us killed. It’s time for leadership rather than Thoughts & Prayers while pretending to care.
