Letter to President Joseph R. Biden

January 20, 2021

Congratulations Honorable President Joe Biden,
I am very thankful for Donald J. Trump. Our nation was broken in so many ways prior to his arrival. With his rise to power, all our cracks and flaws became apparent to us and the world. We were forced to look in the mirror and face our demons. After a violent year of unrest, our collective fear, anger, distrust and division boiled over on January 6th.

We didn’t like what we saw … couldn’t stand who we have become. Election 2020 and COVID19 pushed us to the brink. We realized our form of democracy and Republic is extremely fragile. We will need to listen to our “better angels” if we hope to move forward successfully. Thank you for listening to our concerns on this historic day.

“There is no time to waste when it comes to tackling the crises we face. That’s why today, I am heading to the Oval Office to get right to work delivering bold action and immediate relief for American families.”
President Joe Biden’s first tweet, time-stamped at 12:36 p.m. ET

And, in this time of crisis, America selected you and Vice President Kamala Harris. Together, you represent the BEST of America; not perfect people or policies, but ordinary people willing to commit to perfecting our policies and nation.

Years ago you spoke of “racial jungles.” You helped pass crime legislation that led to the incarceration of millions of poor, Black men. You did what you thought right at the time; yet there were unintended consequences that destroyed faith and trust in our American system of government.

I request now that you end the Institutional Racism surrounding cannabis. Remove this medicinal and healing plant thought to have evolved 28 million years ago on the Tibetan plateau from CSA Schedule I. Release non-violent offenders; expunge criminal records. Give Americans a second chance. Your election itself is a second chance. You likely should have been chosen to succeed President Obama after the successful eight years of your combined efforts.

The broken policies surrounding cannabis crushed my career and our family. As an excellent employee for Hawaiian Electric, the company offered me a new role. Yet my legal, prescribed cannabis medication led the company to terminate me. This cost the company millions in training dollars; created inefficiencies; negatively impacted our small IT work group; and obstructed our mission to update digital securities at a time North Korea searches for vulnerabilities.

Hawaiian Electric CEO & President Constance Hee Lau

CEO & President Constance Hee Lau is a decent person and skilled banker. Yet she was trained by a broken America. She holds outdated views and disregards medical science. Her policies force employees to use dangerous, addictive opioids while discouraging more safe alternatives. Our nation weeps as we collectively suffer the deaths of over 400,000 Americans; yet we have lost more to opioid addiction and overdose.

As Connie Lau directs the most prestigious company in your furthest western tip of the nation, her actions and policies influence business culture and impact families across the many islands in our state. Her minions have corrupted the state’s Civil Rights Commission causing this institution to fail their sacred mission to protect the rights of residents against domination and discrimination from those who are more powerful and privileged.

Please extend your reach from sea to shining sea; from north to south; from east to far west. Start now to heal and unify our divided nation. Ask leaders, officials, executives, the most privileged, and our ordinary citizens to end broken practices that divide, hurt, harm and push us apart.

Thank you and Mahalo Ke Akua
