The position of Supreme Court justice in Hawai’i has a long history of not providing much justice. One of the last Supreme Court justices in the tiny Kingdom of Hawai’i was Sanford Ballard Dole. He was the son of Christian missionaries who ministered in the islands. Their concept of Christianity was to take over government in the islands. Not really in line with the teachings of Jesus.
Along with William W. Hall of Honolulu, who founded Hawaiian Electric Co. in 1891, Dole assisted the Honolulu Rifles in a coup against King David Kalākaua in 1887 by drafting a new constitution. The elite residents forced the agreement on the king, which is infamously referred to as the Bayonet Constitution. Dole was then appointed to be a justice of the Supreme Court of Hawai’i for his collusion.
In 1893, Dole again assisted a local band of mostly White businessmen, the Committee of Thirteen, to overthrow the kingdom. Dole was not an official participant, but drafted their declaration. Dole went on to serve in a number of key political positions in the new government:
- President, Provisional Government of Hawaiʻi, January 17, 1893 – July 4, 1894.
- President, Republic of Hawaiʻi, July 4 1894 – August 12, 1898.
- Governor, Territory of Hawaiʻi, June 14, 1900 – Nov. 23, 1903.
- Federal District Court Justice, U.S. District Court of Hawaiʻi, Nov. 23, 1903 – Dec. 16, 1915.
Hawai’i has a long history of corrupt judges. The upcoming resignation of Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald continues this legacy of a corrupt judiciary. CivilBeat points out that Recktenwald is concerned about “trust issues” and greater transparency. He should be. This review provides a glimpse into what Recktenwald’s judicial system failed to accomplish over the years.

As a PhD candidate at the University of New Mexico, provided criminal justice research for the state. One project was to evaluate judges. Was trained by Judith K. Nakamura. She served as chief justice for State of New Mexico. My research team evaluated nearly 100 judges in 1,000s of hours of observation.
In New Mexico, The People ELECT judges. Judges are accountable to The People and the Law. Judges are appointed to lengthy terms in Hawai’i. Judges are loyal to The RULING Class. They tweak the law as needed to protect them. Hawai’i is rated the MOST CORRUPT state in the nation, as judges allow corruption. The RICH run Hawai’i for the RICH.
I remember the case with privileged legislator Shanon Har. She had been a leading M.A.D.D. champion. Arrested for DWI after HPD observed her driving the wrong way down busy Pi’ikoi street. A previous charge of driving the wrong way on a one-way street was dismissed because of a defect in the citation. [1]
Judge dismissed Har’s latest case claiming the testifying HPD officer was inconsistent: said smell of alcohol was “strong,” previously said it was slight. Strong or Slight is irrelevant to the law. Officers had just cause to arrest Har. Honolulu prosecutors spent much public money. Judge CHEATED the public to protect the Ruling Class. Hawai’i judiciary puts people in danger.
Similarly, privileged former UH football coach June Jones was acquitted on a DWI charge. HPD arrested Jones on Waialae Avenue on suspicion of driving under the influence. Jones’ attorney said there was a problem with the police stopping him, because the officers did not properly “pace” his car to determine he was speeding. Judge dismissed, although Jones had admitted to speeding!
“I was speeding, and got stopped,” Jones said. “I was coming from eating dinner. That’s all I need to say right now.” [2 and 3]
DWI vs. FIREWORKS
Honolulu witnessed a tragic accident related to fireworks this New Year’s eve. However, DWI is a far greater problem. Legislators and officials DRINK. They protect DRUNKS !!!
During the week of December 16, through December 22, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21. In 2024, there were at least 942 DUI arrests, 28 FATALITIES, compared with 930 arrests during the same period the previous year, an increase of 1.3%. [4]
FOUR people were killed, 20 injured, in the fireworks accident. The People like fireworks. Officials like alcohol; at least 28 were killed, many more injured. Officials say, “hold my beer,” as they seek to BAN fireworks!

Have documented my history with the Hawai’i judiciary. Was CHEATED in employment by Hawaiian Electric. Was cheated in legal representation by Rush Moore LLP and attorneys, Jason M. Tani and Bryan M. Harada. Was cheated by Randall C. Whattoff, Cox Fricke LLP, who served an unlawful Rule 11 on the Rush Moore attorneys and me.
Was cheated by William Hoshijo and Liann Ebesugawa, Hawai’i Civil Rights Commission. Circuit Court of the First Circuit Dean E. Ochiai cheated me. Hawaii’s Intermediate Court of Appeals cheated me. Hawaii’s legal system and judiciary is a fucking shitshow. Pardon my French!
This judiciary PROTECTED the powerful $4+ billion corporation Hawaiian Electric and PUNISHED a top-rated, competent IT employee. HECO then incinerated some 102+ human beings, including keiki, and destroyed historic Lahaina town. That’s what CORRUPTION does to The People and our great state!!!

STATE HISTORY
Remember history. In 1893, local elites arrested Lydia Kalākaua, who had assumed the title of Queen Lili’uokalani. They claimed Lydia was inciting potential violence. Probably true. Lydia was furious that her brother, King David Kalākaua, had acquiesced to the 1887 coup and signed the bayonet constitution. This agreement gave local White businessmen greater political power in the small kingdom. Lydia also wanted to fund the kingdom through a national lottery and taxation on sales of opium. Complex and confusing time.
After booting Lydia, local officials selected the kingdom’s justice of the Supreme Court of Hawai’i, Sanford Ballard Dole, to be the FIRST and ONLY president of the newly-formed Republic of Hawai’i. Dole assisted the Committee of Thirteen to overthrow the queen and served as governor of the Territory of Hawai’i after annexation by the USA in 1898. Hawai’i has a long history of corrupt judges. The resignation of Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald leaves a legacy of this corrupt history.
“Judicial independence means that judges are able to decide cases impartially — free from passion, pressure or outside influence,” Recktenwald said. “Only then can we expect the public to have confidence and trust in our decisions.”
