Wenona Westerhold Love this post and completely true

I’m pro-chile, pro-cannabis, and an economist. I love chile — preferably red; and cannabis — preferably sativa. I don’t consume either at this time.

Want to shout out to my friend, Caralyn, for posting a magnificent Mexican Quinoa pizza and delicious guacamole recipe today. Check her out. A little chile and cannabis pare nicely with her dishes.

Chile v. Cannabis By The Financial Numbers

Tallies for the last growing season show planted chile acreage has shrunk by more than half over the last 17 years, from a peak in 2005 of 17,500 acres to 8,100 acres last year.

About 94 percent of the 8,100 acreage was harvested.

As for the value of the chile crop, dropped to an estimated $44.6 million in 2017 despite continued demand for New Mexico’s signature crop. [source]

VALUE of NM Chili Market

  • 2017: $1,507 Million
  • 2016: $1,307 Million

Colorado makes 35 TIMES more on cannabis than NM makes on chili.
